How many times have you made the “I don’t want to be here” face when the higher-ups at work announce that everyone WILL be participating in team building activities? Everyone probably has at least once in their careers, and for good reasons too. Most company team building activities are pretty lame. Despite their efforts to come up with fun team building games, managers struggle to motivate employees to even take part in activities. Employees would actually rather keep working than stop what they’re doing to “team build” with people they don’t talk to.
Well, that’s the whole point of team building activities. The purpose of team building is to build your team up so that they’ll actually work like a team. Many employees think of television show scenes and movie clips when they hear the words “team building activity”. The scenes are often humorous and also discouraging at the same time. It’s quite hilarious to watch these events on TV, but to actually go through these activities is a totally different experience. Real-life team building activities are generally less humorous and more work-based.

Essentially, team building builds trust among employees, it encourages (and somewhat forces) communication, and promotes conflict resolution. The best team building ideas also enable quality professional relationships among employees. They improve the overall workplace and make going to work more fun. If you effectively execute team building activities your employees will be more engaged and it will also boost the company morale. Some great team building activities include corporate scavenger hunts and potlucks. Many teams also play the no smiling game, which entails seeing who can go the longest without smiling. Show and tell also builds trust among teams. After all, it allows employees to share pieces of their personal lives with their coworkers.
All of those activities are great for team building. To encourage team building even more, offer employees prizes. Everybody loves free stuff right? Of course! Reward employees for just participating in activities. Hand out corporate gifts with your company’s logo on it. This will be a reminder that they are part of a team.
Whether it’s a water bottle, coffee mug, or stress ball, employees really do appreciate when the company thinks enough of them to provide them with gifts. This is especially true when the gifts are ones they can actually use!
Team building encourages employees to get to know each other. A lot of people say “I come to work to do work, not make friends.” That is the mindset of a lot of people when it comes to their jobs but the reality is, having that kind of mindset will make going to work a miserable experience. If you’re going to go to work every day, it helps to have someone there that you can talk to or share a laugh with from time to time. That’s not saying that you have to socialize with them outside of work but while you’re at work it helps to have a friend. Team building will create that without employees even realizing it. Keep in mind that when workers enjoy spending time together, their work motivation increases significantly.
When your team accomplishes a goal, it promotes a drive to do better than they did the last time… motivation. When teams meet goals, they should be celebrated in some type of way to show that their hard work isn’t going unnoticed. When employees feel unappreciated, they don’t have any motivation to work hard. In their minds, they’re thinking “what for?” If you want to keep your employees, you have to give them a reason to want to stay.
Company higher-ups often do not have time to get to know every single employee’s name or information about them. However, it is important to make sure the company shows their appreciation. Employees who feel they have a positive work-life balance are more productive and motivated to work.
With team building, your employees will go do certain activities that allow each employee to take notice of their team members’ strengths and weaknesses. So, when team projects come up at work, your team members will be able to look back on those team building projects and recall that one of their team members isn’t too good at one particular task whereas you are. That will allow everyone to work together to play to each other’s strengths to get the project done.
